Every now and then, a natural food takes the world by storm and becomes a hot, trending item. Coconut oil is one of them. Some claim coconut oil can help with weight loss, benefit the immune system, and moisturize skin & hair. The truth is that coconut oil is not for everyone.

Here’s why coconut oil should not be used on all hair types:

You go online and continuously see articles about coconut oil and the moisturizing benefits it can have on hair. While this may be true for some, it’s not true for all. If you notice that your hair feels dry after using coconut oil, you may want to stop using it.

Coconut oil has a low molecular weight and a straight linear chain, making it the perfect contender to penetrate the hair shaft. While this may be good for some types of hair, it’s not the case for all. If you continue to lather on the coconut oil and are experiencing dryness, coconut oil may not be the best solution for you.

So, you may be asking yourself, what does all this mean? In simpler terms, coconut oil is easily absorbed by hair. While this may sound like a good thing, it isn’t for women with a low porosity because the coconut oil takes up space in the hair cuticle and ends up repelling the water. The water needs to be absorbed by the hair to hydrate itself, and if the pores are clogged with coconut oil, this won’t occur.

Alternative to Coconut Oil

The Keranique Micro-Exfoliating Follicle Revitalizing Mask is a pre-shampoo treatment specially formulated with Protein Boost Technology to restore dry hair. The mask unclogs the hair follicles, clearing up any buildup that blocks water absorption and weighs down your hair.

Monitoring your hair after using a new product, whether it be coconut oil, or something specifically made for hair, is important. Just because coconut oil works for some women, does not mean it will work for all.  Stopping your use of the coconut oil is important to prevent future hair damage, dryness and breakage.
