Coconut oil has been all the rage lately. The most common use is to use coconut oil in your cooking and baking routine. However, you can also add coconut oil to your beauty routine as well. Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids that are great for your skin and hair.1 Here are some ways to use coconut oil on your hair for luscious locks:

  1. Replace your current conditioner with coconut oil for a great moisturizer for your scalp and hair. It can also help you keep your hair healthy and promote hair growth.1
  2. Get rid of frizz naturally.1
  3. Get rid of nasty dandruff.1
  4. Grow thicker and fuller hair.1
  5. You also may be able to get rid of lice or prevent lice using coconut oil or get gum out of hair.1 Definitely keep a jar around if you have kids.

So, how do you apply coconut oil to your hair?

First, you’ll need to heat the coconut oil properly. Don’t put it in the microwave as this could degrade the quality of the oil. Place a glass cup of coconut oil into a bowl of warm water. It will begin to melt around 76 degrees. Leave it in the warm bowl of water until it melts completely. Next, massage the oil into your scalp (be careful not to use very hot oil or it may burn you) and into your hair. You may apply the coconut oil to dry or damp hair, but it may spread more easily through damp hair. Make sure to distribute evenly. You can use a clean comb to do this. If you have very oily hair, you may want to skip adding coconut oil to your scalp and just focus on the ends.1

Next, take all of your hair and put it in a shower cap. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, but you can leave it on overnight if you’d like for extra moisturization. When you’re ready to wash out the oil, use warm water to rinse. You may need to shampoo your hair to remove all of the oil completely.1

If you don’t have time for a full treatment, you can use a small amount more towards the ends of your hair as a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz treatment. For best results, choose an organic extra virgin coconut oil.1 You may also add essential oils for added benefits or to give your mixture a pleasant scent.
