Who has time to wash AND dry their hair on a daily basis? Not only can it be time-consuming and cause you to lose some valuable sleep in the morning, but daily washes can actually dry out and damage your hair.1 It is actually recommended that you try to wait as long as possible in between washes if you want luscious locks.1 We all know dry shampoo is a great solution to keep your hair looking like it was just washed at all times, but what if you want a more natural and cost-effective solution?

The following recipe will allow you to make your own dry shampoo, and all you need is cornstarch, baking soda, cocoa powder (if you have dark hair), a funnel, an air-tight container (to store it in), and measuring spoons.

Recipe for Dry Shampoo:

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda2

Measure out the ingredients and use the funnel to mix into a container. Both a mason jar or Tupperware container will work great. Shake the ingredients together until they are thoroughly mixed.

If you have dark hair, it might benefit you to add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to the mix2. That way, the bright white powder won’t stand out or show up in your hair, and bonus, your hair may just emit a lovely chocolate aroma too! Just don’t use too much cocoa powder, or it may melt into your hair.

Depending on your hair’s length and thickness, it is possible for you to have enough dry shampoo for a few months. As long as you keep this mixture sealed in an air-tight container, you should be able to store this in your bathroom with no moisture issues.

How to Use Homemade Dry Shampoo:

  • Put no more than 1/2 teaspoon of the dry shampoo mixture into your hands and rub them together. That is about the size of a dime. It is important that you do not use too much of the mixture, otherwise, you may have a powdery mess to deal with.
  • With your fingers, comb the mixture through the area of your head that needs attention. It is best to focus on the roots of your hair, especially where your part is. Make sure you blend all of the mixture into your hair.
  • If you still notice any of the mixture in your hair, use a brush to blend it even more.
