Premature hair loss in men is something that is commonly addressed and treated in men. Did you know that there are several reasons a woman may experience hair loss, which have little to do with aging? Hair growth happens in 3 different stages, that typically lasts 2-4 months. Hair grows about 6 inches a year for most people, though this number can differ greatly. The average person loses 50-100 strands of hair each day, though that number goes up significantly on days the hair is washed. Not washing your hair will not prevent this added loss, as the hair will follow the cycle either way, and fall out eventually.

If you wake up in the morning, and notice there is a lot of hair on your pillow, you may be experiencing excessive hair loss. Some of the reasons you may be facing hair loss are:

Genetics: Often times, the first thing your doctor will ask you when you bring up hair loss is: “What do the other women in your family look like? Your aunt, mother, grandmother, etc…?” If they all have thin or thinning hair, then your answer may be genetics. If your doctor looks at your scalp under magnification, and sees that the follicles are either too thick, or too thin, then it is likely that you are suffering from androgenetic alopecia, or female pattern baldness. This is the most common cause of hair loss in women, affecting about 50% of women. It is most likely to occur between the ages of 50 and 60, but can happen at any time in a woman’s life.

Medical Condition: If the doctor looks at your scalp, and sees that all of the follicles are the same size, or if the balding came on suddenly, then it might be something other than genetics.  It may be a medical condition. The list of medical conditions that can cause sudden and unexpected hair loss in women is long, and varies greatly. Some of these conditions include pregnancy, thyroid disorders, and anemia; some autoimmune diseases like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or Psoriasis can also cause this sudden loss of hair. Some women believe that menopause can cause hair loss, but it is more likely that the age in which menopause occurs just happens to correlate with that age most women start to notice thinning of the hair. Other medical conditions that can cause premature or sudden hair loss are stress, physical trauma, intense illness, dramatic weight loss over a short period of time, and taking too much Vitamin A.

Damaging Haircare:  Women are often very rough on their hair, exposing it to chemicals like bleach and dyes, brushing too rough, using excessive heat with irons, and product over usage. All of these practices can lead to hair loss, because the hair becomes damages and brittle, and breaks off.  Certain hairstyles, like cornrows or tight braids, can cause something called Traction Alopecia, a pattern hair loss caused by the stress on the scalp. Luckily for most women, changing their routine to be more hair-friendly should completely stop the problem, and hair should grow back easily.

Whatever the reason behind your hair loss, it is important to address it with your doctor, and find the underlying cause. Using products that reverse hair loss can also be a great way to combat the issue; products that contain Minoxidil are considered the most effective.
