We’ve all seen the commercials and advertisements with models showing off gorgeous, envy-worthy locks.  And whether those stunning tresses are blonde or red, long or short, curly or straight, there’s one thing that they always have in common – they’re got major shine.

Because let’s face it – that’s how we think healthy hair looks, right?  Perfectly smooth and shiny, just like in a magazine ad.

So it can be seriously frustrating to look in the mirror and see dull, dry locks staring back at you. Your hair can lose its shine for a variety of reasons, but don’t despair too much – with a few simple tweaks to your routine, you can revive dull hair and get shiny, lustrous locks that can turn heads just like your favorite shampoo commercial.

Be Gentle

The more stress that you put on your hair, the more likely it is to become dry and dull. So when you want to restore the shine, try being a little more gentle with your locks. Instead of a plastic bristle brush, opt for natural boar bristles instead – they aren’t as likely to snag your hair so it looks smoother and healthier. When you use heated styling tools like your blow dryer, straightening iron, or curling iron, always treat your tresses with a heat protectant like CHI 44 Iron Guard first to prevent them from getting fried.

You also may want to cut back on your washing if your locks are looking dull. Shampooing everyday can actually strip your hair of the natural oils that keep it looking shiny. Try to wash every other or every third day instead to boost your locks’ shine. If your roots are looking a little greasy on the in-between days, work bit of baby powder through your hair to soak up the oil and add some texture.

Banish Buildup

If you have straight hair that’s starting to look a little dull, product buildup may be the culprit. Heavy styling products like gel and mousse can leave residue behind that robs your hair of its shine. However, you can still use a lightweight, sulfate free shampoo like Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo. If you’re a fan of DIY treatments, you can mix a little baking soda with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and your usual shampoo and use as a weekly wash.

Keep It Hydrated

If you’ve got curly hair, your locks can start to look dull when it gets dry and the cuticle is rough. To boost the shine, you need to put some moisture back into your tresses.  Try to deep condition you hair by using a mix of olive and coconut oil.  Simply apply the mixture generously to your entire head and let it sit for 20-30 minutes to seal in the moisture.

Seal Your Cuticle

When you want to banish dull locks in a hurry, the trick is sealing your hair’s cuticle so it looks super smooth and shiny. Start in the shower by rinsing your hair with cold water after you’ve shampooed and conditioned it. The cool water helps close the cuticle after washing so it lays flat for sleek shine. To smooth any cracks that there might still be in the cuticle, apply a serum like our Follicle Boosting Serum and you’re food to go. It makes for a no fuss and sophisticated evening look, too.
