Pregnancy is a time of joy and jubilation and all that stuff.  But what happens to that joy when you experience hair loss after your child’s birth?  Post -natal hair loss affects a large percent of women.  It can even put a damper on that “I have a new baby glow” that you’ve been so proud of.  You start to wonder “Why am I losing my hair?” and “Am I the only on that goes bald after giving birth?” (Okay “bald” may be a little dramatic.)  But really, is this normal?

Hair loss is something that occurs in women a few months after giving birth. It’s common to see more and more hair in your brush, and the drain when you wash. Visibly it can be a little embarrassing, and mentally it can be stressful to wonder “how long will this last”. There’s no need to worry, you won’t go bald. Doctors say that your hair will most likely go back to its normal texture by the baby’s first birthday.

Why do so many new moms lose their hair? This is because the estrogen level in your body returns to normal, and the hair finally comes out of its resting phase it was in while you were pregnant. The result? Shedding. Sigh.

The thinning occurs because while your hair is shedding, 60% of it goes back into a resting phase. That’s a whole lot of hair not growing while the rest of your hair is actively shedding! I don’t even have to tell you that the shedding will be frustrating. Who wants to worry about losing her hair with a newborn to take care of?

Hair loss after pregnancy is normal, and it is temporary. Try to remember that you’re not alone and it won’t last forever. Many new mothers use this time to get a new haircut.  If nothing else, this could be a great excuse to pamper yourself!

When styling your hair, try to avoid pulling your hair back and avoid using heating tools like hair irons. It can be hard to style thinning hair, but there are other ways to create volume. A little bit of Keranique Thickening & Texturizing Mousse and Amplifying Lift spray will help your hair seem thicker and more voluminous.

Vitamins, especially those specifically designed to strengthen your hair, can be a lifesaver! You probably remember this from your prenatal vitamin days when your hair was shiny and strong. We recommend our own  Daily Essentials for Healthy-Looking Hair & Strong Nails. These supplements contain a nutritional powerhouse for your hair with beta-carotene, vitamin A, calcium and a B-complete complex to name a few. These ingredients will help you grow and maintain strong, healthy, shiny hair.

Thinning hair can be stressful, especially with a new baby in the picture. Don’t fret; it’s only temporary. Follow our advice and you’ll get your hair back in no time!

Keranique Regrowth Treatment with 2% Minoxidil is not recommended for usage during pregnancy and during breastfeeding, however we do have an alternative called Follicle Boosting Serum which will help to thicken and strengthen existing hair. Keep in mind, we do recommended speaking with your physician prior to starting a new product while you are pregnant. You can see more here: https://keranique.com/hair-growth-products
