When winter months roll around, you’ll see your hair getting staticky and dry. The cold air can cause the outer layer of your hair, known as the cuticle, dry out and let moisture escape. Hair can become more brittle and even frizzy. Here are some things you can do to proactively prevent dry winter hair:

Hair mask
You’ll want to do everything you can to lock in moisture this winter. Try doing hair masks once a week, depending on how naturally oily your hair is. You can try out natural solutions like coconut oil, honey or olive oil. If you suffer from thinning hair, try the Keranique Micro-Exfoliating Follicle Revitalizing Mask. It can make your hair look thicker and helps repair split ends.

Moisturizing Products
Aside from dryer air in the atmosphere, winter means your hair is being exposed to dry heat indoors. It can be helpful to replace your normal products with those specifically formulated to improve your hair’s ability to retain moisture. Try using a clarifying shampoo once in a while to prevent buildup of these heavier products that can dull your hair.

Frequent Trims
Dry hair means more split ends. Whatever you do, don’t split them! The best way to get rid of split ends is to simply trim them away. Trimming once every two months can make your hair appear thicker and healthier.

Blow Dry Smarter
Exposing your hair to extremes temperatures, whether it’s outdoors or in front of a mirror can have damaging effects. A 2011 study actually discovered the healthiest way to dry your wet hair. The conclusion was that you should let your hair air dry until it’s about 75% of the way dry. Then, blow dry your hair on a low temperature setting. Keep the blow dryer about six inches away from your hair at all times, and move it around consistently.
