It’s a frightening change, and one that is hard to get used to. You wake up and there are a few strands on the pillow. In the shower, more are swirling down the drain. When you brush or blow dry and there are even more.
There’s no two ways about it… hair loss is hard! And honestly, nothing anyone can say will change that.
And this is not a new problem. We have been dealing with hair loss forever and can trace back in history when this same problem was dealt with in the late 1600’s when wigs were invented. They quickly became the norm in many European countries, changed fashion, and even became a status symbol. They were so popular that many people chose to shave their heads (hair loss or not) to make it easier to get in and out of their wigs!
Over time, and after the wig craze died down, many men who were balding simply shaved it all off, a style that became timeless. However, it has not always been as easy for women. In days past, dealing with hair loss included ‘tonics’ and ‘cure-alls’ that did not help. When wigs and wiglets returned briefly in the 1950’s and early 1960’s, they quickly became part of fashion again and were a tremendous relief for women battling this change.
These days, wigs and weaves are used less often and going natural is the preferred style, making it harder for some women to hide their thinning or balding hair.
There are many reasons for hair loss or thinning hair. Some include:
- Reactions to medications or chemicals
- Family history
- Poor diet
- Overuse of hair dyes and chemical processing.
No matter the cause, it’s still heart breaking to watch the sink fill with falling hair and things are not made easier when we are inundated with images of women’s long thick “perfect” hair in the media.
Everyone is different. Some people’s hair starts to thin out slowly and with a few hair products, the right hair color and style, you can create an illusion of thicker hair. For others, bald patches appear that are sometimes harder to hide.
For some women, their hair loss can cause deep depression and make them feel less beautiful; some blame themselves, furthering the negativity.
No matter what the cause of your thinning hair, please remember a few things:
- We are more than the number of hair follicles on our head!
- Our beauty is not, nor will it ever be, defined by our hair alone.
- You are not the only person dealing with this.
- No matter the reason for your hair loss, you are too strong to let your hair get you down!
