The stories you’ve heard countless times from your mom or your aunt telling you that if you continue to be highly stressed, your hair will turn grey quicker or overnight – they’re not true. It all starts with genetics. If your parents or grandparents experienced their first grey hair at an early age, chances are that you will also experience the same. But if you’re damaging your health by smoking or you have poor nutrition, this can speed up the process and you will be seeing your grey hair even earlier.

So what makes your hair turn grey? Your hair grows from a single follicle, which contains melanin, a pigment that gives hair their color. As we get older, the melanin in your hair begins to stop producing color. The pigment cells in the hair begin to die gradually; it doesn’t happen all at once. It takes time for the de-coloration process to begin. From there, your hair will continue to spontaneously grow grey.

How can you prevent this from happening? Unfortunately, you can’t control your genetics. Some studies show you can slow the process down a bit by having a nutritious diet and taking care of your body – that can result in visibly healthy hair. You can always dye your roots and/or your hair to hide the inevitable. Grey hair is not a result of high levels of stress, just your genes.

If you are experiencing stress, this can lead to hair loss and thinning hair. Stress not only can cause hair loss, it’s a major factor in hair loss for women.   Explore our full range of Keranique hair products to help restore your hair!
